There are times when you need to search for information online. But typing what you are looking for into a search engine could bring back lots of results. This will help you search more effectively online.

Search A Site

site:nhs.uk contraception

This will limit the search about contraception to the NHS website.

Search A Filetype

filetype:ppt

This will limit the search to PowerPoint presentations.

AND

“apples” AND “oranges”

Most search engines automatically use AND searches.

OR

“cats” OR “dogs”

Used to find alternative terms.

NOT

property law NOT intellectual

This will find pages about property and law, but NOT intellectual.

Define

Define:word

Will bring up a dictionary definition.

Thesaurus

Thesaurus:word

Will find alternatives to a word.

Translate

Translate:word

Will translate into several languages.
