Your A-level results will be available from 8am at school. Staff will be available to provide advice and support where needed. Read the guidance below so you are prepared for results day:

If you meet all the conditions of your offer, you will be accepted by the university.

Even if you have not quite met the requirements, the university or college may lower its offer and still accept you. Check Track in UCAS to see their decisions.

Once you receive your results, you will be in one of the positions below:

  • You are accepted by your firm choice
  • You are accepted by your firm choice, and you meet and exceed the conditions of the offer (you may consider using clearing)
  • You receive a ‘changed course’ offer
  • Your results do not meet the conditions of your firm choice, but you are accepted by your insurance choice
  • Your results do not meet the conditions of any of your choices (you can still find courses through clearing)
  • You are not holding any offers (you can still find courses through clearing)

Clearing

UCAS Clearing is a system that operates between 5 July and 19 October. It is a second chance to get your place at university. You can participate in Clearing if you have already applied through UCAS and one of the following situations applies to you:

  • You have not received any offers
  • You have declined all your offers or not responded by due date
  • Your offers have not been confirmed because you have not met the conditions (for example, you have not achieved the required grades).
  • You have declined a changed course, a changed date of entry and/or changed point of entry offer.
  • You applied for one course which has been declined/unsuccessful, and you have paid the full £26 fee.

Using clearing because you have not met the grades for your Firm and Insurance Place

If you do not receive an offer because you have not achieved the grades, you will automatically be entered into Clearing and you will see this through Track. You will also be given a Clearing Number.

In Clearing, applicants contact institutions directly to discuss the courses available and whether their application can be considered.

You can contact as many universities as you like and may receive offers from several. Do not feel that you must accept the first offer that you receive: remember that you will be spending at least three years studying the course, so make sure that the university and course are right for you before you accept a place.

Each university will provide you with a course code and institution code. When you have decided which offer you want to take up, you must enter the details on Track.

You can only enter one choice, and you must have discussed your application with the university first. If you enter a choice without doing this you are likely to cause yourself significant delays and may even lose out on the course.

Using Clearing because you have got better than expected results or would like to change your course/university

If you no longer wish to go to your firm and/or insurance but you met the offer (or they are accepting you with lower grades) then you can choose to use the new self-release option.

This allows you to release yourself into Clearing to apply to a different institution. Previously, students had to contact their chosen university and ask to be released before they could apply elsewhere.

To use it, you should:

  1. Sign into your Track account and click the ‘Decline my place’ button on your profile page.
  2. You will be then seeing a page explaining what this involves and asked to answer a series of questions and confirm your decision.
  3. You will then receive an email confirming you are now in Clearing.
  4. You should immediately phone UCAS if you think you have made a mistake.

Once your release has been processed, your Clearing number will show on Track.

Start calling around universities – with your Clearing number admissions tutors will be able to see your full application and might ask you to apply.

If they do then they are offering you a place, and if you wish to take it up you should add it as a Clearing Choice on your UCAS Track page.

Think carefully before using the UCAS self-release feature – if you change your mind, it is unlikely your existing place will still be open.

Changing universities at this point means you will also have to reapply for accommodation and amend your student finance application.
