What is EPQ?

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a standalone qualification designed to extend and develop your skills in independent research and project management. Students are required, with appropriate supervision, to:• choose an area of interest

draft a title and aims of the project for formal approval by the centre
plan, research and carry out the project
deliver a presentation to a non specialist audience
provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment.

The project can take the format of a 5000 word written report or an artefact and a 1000 word report.

How does the EPQ relate to a student’s programme of study?

The EPQ requires students to carry out research on a topic that they have chosen and is not covered by their other qualifications. They then use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact or a production.

A student can take inspiration from something studied in class or something completely unrelated to their studies.

Is the EPQ popular?

35,608 students took the EPQ in 2017 across all subject areas. Many EPQs are interdisciplinary or in subject areas not typically studied at key stage 5.

The EPQ is the perfect way for you to extend and develop your knowledge beyond the material being covered in class and explore your passion for a topic.

The EPQ allows you to embark on a largely self-directed project. By taking responsibility for the choice and design of an individual project (or an individual role in a group project). As a result students will :

become more critical, reflective and independent learners
develop and apply decision-making and problem – solving skills
increase their planning, research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills
learn to apply new technologies confidently
demonstrate creativity, initiative and enterprise.

Is it recognised by universities or employers? The EPQ is awarded UCAS points worth half an A-level (which is more than a stand-alone AS) and is recognised by universities and employers; many leading universities make alternative offers to students undertaking an EPQ.
