Core Maths Level 3 Mathematical Studies

Course Summary

Core Maths has been created in association with employers, universities and professionals as a valuable way of continuing mathematical studies beyond GCSEs without following an A-Level course. Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real life problem solving skills by strengthening and extending existing skills and enables students to tackle meaningful mathematical problems linked to everyday lives.

Core Maths at Arthur Terry

• The course is delivered over 1 year with 2 exams in the summer exam series

• You achieve a stand-alone AS Level equivalent qualification which holds the same UCAS points as any other AS qualification.

• You need a Grade 5 or above in Mathematics at GCSE

• You are offered 2 different routes in order to provide you with a personalised course to support the other subjects that you have chosen.

• Lessons are taught by specialist teachers who have been fully informed about the continuing developments of this innovative new course.

• Problem solving approach to learning linked to real life examples.

Assessment

Core Maths is assessed in the summer exam series with 2 written papers. Both papers are 90 minutes long and allow the use of a calculator.

Paper 1: Core Content

Paper 2a/2b: Statistical Techniques/Critical Path Analysis – students take 1 of these papers depending on the personalised route that they have taken during the year.

Subject Entry Requirements

In addition to the general Sixth Form Entry requirements students will need the following:
GCSE English Literature or Language: Grade 4 or above
GCSE Mathematics: Grade 5 or above
This subject is compulsory for students who have a Grade 5 in Maths and are studying the following subjects:

A-Level Business Studies
A-Level Psychology
A-Level Biology
A-Level Geography

This subject is optional for students who have a Grade 6 or above in Maths.
